The One Who Called You Does It

He was nineteen and it happened in a stairwell of all places, and he has never doubted it once in thirty-six years.

Something was put on him. He would not use grand words about it and he has never told the story publicly, but he knows what happened in that stairwell and he knows what he understood about his life afterward.

He is fifty-five.

And here is the shape his whole life has taken since, and he has never once examined the assumption underneath it: God started it, and then it was over to him.

That is how he has read it. A calling issued, like a commission, and then a man's life spent trying to be adequate to it. Every decision measured against it. Every dry year read as slippage on a mandate he was given at nineteen and has been carrying ever since.

And what that has produced, over thirty-six years, is a particular exhaustion that his wife would recognize instantly if he could put it into words. He has never had a season in his adult life that was not, underneath, an attempt to deliver on something.

The last two years he has been flat, and the flatness worries him more than it would worry another man, because if the calling was a commission then a flat year is failure to execute.

The six words after the calling

Paul ends a letter with a sentence about the one who calls, and the second half of it is six words long and it undoes thirty-six years of your arithmetic.

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.1 Thessalonians 5:24

Who also will do it.

The one who issues the calling is named as the one who performs it. Not who helps with it. Not who supports the person performing it. Does it.

And that is written immediately after Paul has prayed something enormous over that church, that their whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless, which is not a thing anybody could deliver on. He prays for something impossible and then he says, in effect, do not worry about the size of it, because the one asking is the one doing.

So look at what happened at nineteen. A calling was issued, and you heard it correctly. What you did not hear, because nobody said it and it is not obvious, is that the caller stays on the job.

You are called by Someone who does not hand the work over at the point of calling. That is not me lifting a burden you were meant to carry; 1 Thessalonians 5:24 names the caller as the doer in six words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes them and lays them beside a stairwell thirty-six years back.

What the misreading cost

Now let me name the cost, because you have carried it a long time and it has never had a name.

You have lived every one of those years as a man under a mandate. That is not the same as living as a man who is loved. It looks similar from outside; both men are serious, both are faithful, both turn up. But one of them is resting on the caller and the other one is delivering, and only one of them can ever put anything down.

You have never had an evening off from it. Not one, in thirty-six years, because a mandate does not have evenings.

You have been executing something you were only ever called into. The written word attaches the doing to the caller in the same breath as the calling, and the Holy Spirit is not a commissioner who issues a task and withdraws to see how it goes.

And the flat two years, which is where you are now. If the calling were a commission, then yes, a flat year would be slippage. But it is not, and so a flat year is a flat year. Nothing has slipped. There is no schedule, there is no mandate at risk, and the guardrail on this whole site is that nothing about the tending was ever handed to you, so a cold stretch cannot be a delivery failure.

You are not behind on anything, and the next dry season will not be a breach either. Scripture puts the calling and the doing in the same hands, and the Holy Spirit has been the one working through two years a man has read as failure to execute.
