He was seventeen when he started and he could tell you the month.
Nobody discipled him. There was no older man, and that is not a complaint, it is simply what happened; the church he came into was small and busy and full of good people who assumed a serious young man was getting on fine.
He was getting on fine. He worked out a way of doing it and he did it, and he has done it for thirty-five years without a break longer than a fortnight.
He is fifty-two.
And the thing nobody knows, including his wife, is that he has never once let anybody carry any part of it.
He has led groups. He has discipled other men and been good at it. He has prayed with people through the worst weeks of their lives. But nobody in thirty-five years has been told a single true thing about the state of his own life with God, and when he is asked, which is rare, he gives an answer that is not a lie and is not the truth either.
What he feels now is not doubt and it is not coldness exactly. It is a specific kind of tiredness, thirty-five years deep, that he has never been able to name, and the closest he has come to describing it to himself is: I have been on watch a long time.
Count how many were on it
The instructions for the lamp in the tabernacle are worth reading closely, because there is a detail in them about staffing.
to cause the lamp to burn always. In the tabernacle of the congregation without the vail, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD.Exodus 27:20-21
Aaron and his sons. Plural. And then the hours: from evening to morning.
That is a watch, and it is a shared one. The lamp was to burn always, and the always was covered by more than one man, in shifts, through the night, in a rota that had been thought about.
Nobody in that arrangement was expected to be awake for the whole of it. The continuity of the light was never resting on one person's stamina, and the design of the thing assumed that a man on his own could not do it and should not be asked to.
You have been standing a watch that Scripture staffed with a family, and you have stood it alone since you were seventeen. That is not me easing a discipline you are proud of; Exodus 27:21 names Aaron and his sons and gives the hours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old rota and lays it beside a man who has never been relieved.
What thirty-five years alone does
Now let me name the tiredness properly, because you have never had a word for it and that is part of why it has lasted.
It is not spiritual dryness in the ordinary sense. You have had those too and you know what they feel like. This is different, and it is the specific exhaustion of a man who has been the only one who knows.
You have carried other people's insides for three decades and nobody has carried yours. Not because they refused; because you never handed it over, and because you have become so competent at the handing-out end that nobody has thought to ask, and the few who did got the answer that is not quite true.
You have been the only person in the world who knows how you actually are, and no man was built to be that. The written word puts the lamp in the hands of a family taking turns rather than one man's endurance, and the Holy Spirit is not a Spirit who works only through solitary keepers.
And here is the thing I most want you to have, because it is the actual landing. The keeping was never yours in the first place. God is the one who tends this; that is what the lamp regulation is about. Aaron and his sons were not generating the light, they were ordering the lamp He had commanded, and their whole job existed inside His arrangement rather than instead of it.
So the handing over is not you finally getting help with your responsibility. It is you stopping the pretense that it was ever your responsibility.
You are not the keeper of your own fire and you never were. Scripture puts the tending inside God's own arrangement and staffs it with more than one person, and the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping a man alight through thirty-five years he thought he was carrying alone.
So here is the hour, and there is no routine in it, and there is not going to be one.
This is the last thing this site would ever hand you: a maintenance schedule. You have had one since you were seventeen, self-designed, self-audited, and it has been excellent and it has nearly finished you.
And nothing here needs you to feel differently tomorrow. If you wake and the tiredness is exactly the same thirty-five-year weight, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you tell somebody one true thing.
Not everything. One true sentence about how your own walk with God actually is, said out loud to one person who is not God. Your wife, or the man you meet on a Thursday, or the one who has asked twice and got the polite answer.
You are permitted to be a man somebody else knows about, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God arranges when it puts the lamp in the hands of more than one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a solitary watch off a man of fifty-two.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, sitting or standing, in whatever voice today has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about who ordered the lamp from evening to morning is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether the tiredness lifts is His to give and never mine to arrange.
- Watch I have stood alone since seventeen, you were never a solo post. The word of God names Aaron and his sons ordering that lamp from evening to morning, and the design assumed that no one man could cover the always of it.
- Habit of being the only one who knows, you are finished this week. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is not a Spirit who works only through solitary keepers, and nobody is meant to be awake for thirty-five years.
- Lord, the tending was always Yours and the lamp was always Your arrangement. I thank You, because Your word puts the ordering inside Your own design rather than on any man's stamina, and Your Spirit has been on this station through every night I thought I was holding it alone.
