The confusion started early and it has taken forty years to become a real problem.
He was taught, in the way children are taught things nobody says out loud, that a heart that is warm shows it. That love and demonstration are the same event seen from two sides, and that a person who does not demonstrate is a person who does not have it.
Nobody sat him down and said this. It was simply how everybody around him behaved, and children learn a whole theology from behavior long before they can read.
He is sixty-two. And the practical result is that he has spent about four decades attempting to be a different kind of man, and the attempts have all failed in the same way, which is that they were visible attempts.
And now the real difficulty, which is worse than the failing.
He genuinely cannot tell any more.
He does not know whether he is a quiet man with a warm heart or a man who has gone cold. Those two would look identical from where he is standing, and he has no instrument to separate them, and so he has been living for years inside a question he cannot answer with a verdict he keeps half passing on himself.
The valuation God puts on it
Peter says something about what God values, and I want to handle it honestly, including who he is addressing.
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.1 Peter 3:4
He is writing to wives in that passage, about adornment, and I am not going to pretend otherwise or lift the verse out of its address.
But look at what he says as his reason, because the reason is a general statement about God rather than about wives. Which is in the sight of God of great price. That is a valuation, and it is God's, and it is stated as a fact about how He assesses rather than as advice to one group.
And notice the phrase before it. The hidden man of the heart. Peter has a category for the interior person, and he calls the interior person the real one, and he is contrasting it with an exterior that everybody can see.
You are valued at a high price by God in exactly the part of you nobody can see. That is not me stretching a passage past its address; 1 Peter 3:4 gives God's valuation as its reason and puts it on the hidden person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that and lays it beside a man of sixty-two who cannot tell what he is.
How to tell the difference
Now let me actually answer your question, because you asked a real one and it deserves better than reassurance.
You want to know how to distinguish a quiet warm man from a cold one, from the inside, with no instrument.
Here is the difference, and it is not a feeling.
A cold heart does not mind being cold. That is what coldness is. It is not that a cold man feels the absence sharply; the absence stops registering as an absence. He gets on with things and does not think about it and does not go looking at half past ten at night for something about whether he has gone cold.
Minding is the diagnostic. Not warmth. Minding.
You have been asking a question that only a warm heart asks. The written word puts God's high valuation on the hidden person, and the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping a man minding for forty years.
And let me guard the other side, as this site always does. None of this makes the demonstrative man shallow. The people you grew up among were not putting on a show; their warmth showed because that is what warmth does in them, and it was real. Your mistake was not about them. It was in the general rule you built out of them, which is that showing is the only form warmth takes.
You are not a failed version of the people you grew up with, and no form was ever the required one. Scripture places great price on the hidden man of the heart, and the Holy Spirit does not audit a household's worth of temperaments and rank them.
So here is the hour.
I am not going to ask you to feel warm, and I am certainly not going to ask you to demonstrate anything. You have had forty years of that instruction from the world you grew up in and it has produced nothing but costumes.
And nothing here needs you to arrive at certainty about yourself. If you close this and still cannot tell, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you accept the diagnostic and stop running the question.
You mind. You have minded for forty years, at a cost, in private, with nobody watching and no reward for minding. That is not what coldness does, and it is the only piece of evidence anybody in your position ever gets.
You are a man whose hidden person God values at great price, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God says when it gives His own valuation as the reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a forty-year question off a man.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, sitting or standing, in whatever voice today has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about the hidden man of the heart being of great price is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because what anybody makes of me is His to handle and never mine to demonstrate.
- Confusion between quiet and cold, you are two things and not one. The word of God puts great price on the hidden man of the heart, and a cold heart does not lie awake minding that it is cold.
- Rule I built at six years old about how warmth has to look, you have no ground. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit does not rank a household's temperaments and never issued a required form.
- Lord, You value the hidden person at great price and You said it as a fact about how You see. I thank You, because Your word puts the assessment in Your own sight rather than in anybody's living room, and Your Spirit has kept me minding for forty years.
