She notices it on the Wednesday of a good week, which is a strange time to notice a thing like that.
It has been a good week. That is the point. She has read in the mornings and it has not been an effort. She prayed in the car on Monday and lost track of the time. Something happened on Sunday, not dramatic, but she came out different and her husband noticed.
And on Wednesday afternoon, standing at the sink, she realizes she has spent the entire week watching it.
Not enjoying it. Watching it, the way you watch a bird that has come into the garden and might go at any moment, so that the whole of the time it is there is spent anticipating the moment it is not.
She is fifty-two. She has been through four or five long dry stretches in twenty-eight years, and the last one was two years and it was the worst.
And what those have done to her is not what you would expect. They have not made her doubt God. They have made her unable to receive a good week, because a good week is now the beginning of the interval before the next bad one, and she cannot be in it without measuring how long it has left.
Who is able to take it
Jesus says something about His own hand, and it is worth reading for who it rules out.
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.John 10:28
Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
Notice this is not a statement about how tightly the sheep hold on. It is a statement about who is capable of removing them, and the answer given is nobody.
And notice what He does not say. He does not say the pasture will always be green, and He does not say the weather will not turn. Sheep have seasons. What He is describing is not a guarantee about conditions; it is a fact about custody.
So the question your Wednesday is actually asking, which is how long have I got, has a different answer than you think. The dry stretch may come back. I am not going to promise you it will not, and anybody who does is inventing a forecast. But a dry stretch is a season and not a removal, and what you have been bracing against is not a thing that can happen.
You are held in a hand nobody is able to take you out of. That is not me offering you a comfort about the weather; John 10:28 rules out every possible remover by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that and stands it beside a woman at a sink on a good Wednesday.
What the last two years taught you
Now let me be honest about where this came from, because you did not invent this reflex out of nervousness.
The last dry stretch was two years long and it was genuinely awful, and it came after a good season, and something in you drew a conclusion at the end of it that has been governing you since: good weeks are what comes before bad ones.
That is a real observation about a real pattern. Your seasons do alternate. Most people's do.
But look at what you did with the observation. You turned a description of a pattern into a way of living inside one half of it, so that the good half no longer arrives at all. It arrives as an interval. And the effect is that two years of dryness has been quietly extended into twenty-eight years of it, because the warm weeks were converted into anxious weeks and there is nothing left that is simply good.
You have been paying for a dry season with your good ones, and nobody asked you for that. The written word puts your custody in Christ's hand and rules out every remover, and the Holy Spirit is not the author of the forecast you have been running.
And here is the thing this whole site keeps saying, and it applies to the next cold stretch if it comes. It will not be your failure. That is the guardrail on all of this: nothing about the tending was ever handed to you, so a dry month is not a report on your maintenance.
You are not the keeper of this and the next cold week is not a verdict waiting to be issued. Scripture gives the keeping to Him and names no condition on the sheep, and the Holy Spirit has been the one holding a woman through four or five long winters already.
So here is the hour, and it does not involve promising you weather.
I am not going to tell you the next dry stretch is not coming. I do not know, and the two years you had were real and I am not going to talk over them.
And nothing here needs you to feel secure. If you finish this and catch yourself on Friday measuring how much of the good week is left, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you stop paying in advance.
The dry season, if it comes, will cost what it costs when it arrives. It does not need to be paid for now, out of a good Wednesday, in the currency of a woman who cannot enjoy anything.
You are held in a custody nothing can interrupt, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God says when it rules out every possible remover, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a forecast off a woman at a sink.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, standing or sitting, in whatever voice today has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about no one plucking you out of His hand is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because what next month holds is His to decide and never mine to forecast.
- Wait for the good week to end, you are not a forecast and you never were one. The word of God says no one is able to pluck them out of His hand, and that is a fact about custody rather than a promise about weather.
- Bill I have been paying in advance out of my good weeks, you are canceled. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is not the author of the calculation I have been running at a sink.
- Lord, I am in Your hand and nobody is able to take me out of it. I thank You, because Your word rules out every remover by name and puts no condition on the sheep, and Your Spirit has held me through four or five winters already.
