It is still in you. I am saying that first, before the examination, because you are going to read this looking for the flaw.
And I know it is still in you because of the examination itself. A man who was never real does not spend four years auditing his own conversion at three in the morning. He forgets about it. He gets on with his weekend.
He is forty-nine and it goes back to a Tuesday in a hall much like the one he still sits in.
He was twenty-two. There was a man speaking who was not a great speaker, and something happened, and he went home different, and for about eleven years everything in his life ran off that night.
Then a long flat stretch, and it has now been six years, and somewhere in the middle of it a thought arrived that he has not been able to put down.
What if that night was not it?
And once that is in, everything becomes evidence. He goes back over the Tuesday looking for the flaw. Was it emotion. Was it the atmosphere in the room. He was twenty-two and lonely and away from home, and he has read about how these things work on people.
He goes over the eleven good years too, and reinterprets them. Maybe that was momentum. Maybe it was being in a good church with good friends and it would have looked the same in a man with nothing in him at all.
And the six flat years are the finding, as he reads it. The real state, showing through, once the scaffolding came away.
What Micah lets a man say
Micah says something out loud from the bottom of a bad stretch, and it is worth having because of what he permits himself to admit.
Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.Micah 7:8
When I sit in darkness.
Not if. When. He treats sitting in the dark as a thing that happens to him, an expected feature of a real life with God, and he says it without embarrassment and without treating it as a disclosure about his standing.
And look at what he refuses to concede. Rejoice not against me. He is speaking to an accuser and telling it that the darkness is not the win it takes itself for. He does not argue that he is not in the dark. He argues about what the dark means.
You are permitted to sit in the dark without it being a finding about you. That is not me talking you out of your own evidence; Micah 7:8 has a man in darkness refusing to concede the point, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that and stands it beside a man auditing a Tuesday at three in the morning.
The problem with the re-examination
Now let me say something about the audit itself, because it has a structural flaw and you would see it in any other investigation.
You are examining a night from twenty-seven years ago using a memory shaped by six flat years. Every piece of evidence you retrieve arrives already colored by the state you are in while retrieving it, which means the audit cannot come back any other way. It is not that you keep finding problems; it is that this particular inquiry can only find problems.
And the deeper flaw is the premise. You are treating your own experience of that Tuesday as the thing that made it real, so a doubt about the experience becomes a doubt about the reality. But if the night was real, what made it real was not the quality of what you felt in a hall at twenty-two. It was Christ, and Christ has not been re-examined by anybody.
You have been auditing the wrong side of the transaction entirely. The written word puts a believer's standing on what Christ did rather than on the texture of a night, and the Holy Spirit is not a feeling a man had in a room and then lost track of.
And I want to say the plain thing this whole site says, because it applies exactly here. Dry feeling is not evidence of anything. It is not distance, it is not sin, and it is certainly not a diagnostic for whether a conversion took. If flatness proved unreality, the church would be a very small building.
You are not looking at the real state showing through, and there was never scaffolding holding anything up. Scripture puts the keeping in Christ's hands rather than in the strength of the start, and the Holy Spirit has been the seal on that through six years a man has read as an exposure.
So here is the hour.
I am not going to tell you what happened at twenty-two, because I was not there. And nothing here needs you to feel certain. If you close this and the audit starts again tonight, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you close the inquiry.
Not because you have proved the Tuesday. Because the inquiry is examining the wrong side, cannot return any other verdict in your current state, and has been running for four years on a question that Christ settled without consulting your memory.
You are held by Somebody who was never under investigation, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God does when it puts a believer's standing in Christ rather than in an experience, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes an audit off a man at three in the morning.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, standing or sitting, in whatever voice tonight has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about sitting in darkness and the Lord being a light is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether the certainty ever comes back is His to give and never yours to produce.
- Verdict that I was never real, you are not a finding and you never had a fair inquiry. The word of God has Micah sitting in darkness and saying so plainly, and he refuses to let his enemy call that the end of it.
- Audit of a Tuesday twenty-seven years ago, you are closed. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is not a feeling I had in a hall at twenty-two and then mislaid.
- Lord, I sit in darkness and You are a light to me, and You were never the part under examination. I thank You, because Your word puts my standing in Christ rather than in the texture of one night, and Your Spirit has kept me in that building through six years of doubting all of it.
