The box is labeled BOOKS/MISC in marker that has gone brown, and it is the fourth box in and it is heavier than it looks, and about a third of the way down there is a notebook with a cheap purple cover she has not seen in nineteen years.
She sits back on her heels on the floorboards.
She should keep unpacking. There are eleven more boxes and the kettle is somewhere in one of them. But she is already reading, and it is her own handwriting, rounder than it is now, pressed hard into the page with a biro, and it says things like I could not stop crying tonight and it was the good kind and I do not care what happens with the course, I just want to be near Him.
She reads four pages standing up in a room full of cardboard, and then she puts the notebook face down on the arm of the sofa the way you put something down when you do not want to look at it any more.
Because here is the arithmetic she does, and she does it fast, the way you do a sum you have done before. That girl was twenty-two. She cried in a hall with a bad PA system and meant every word of it. And the woman on the floorboards has not cried about God in something like four years, and she still prays, and she still goes, and she still means it, and something in the middle of it has gone quiet in a way she cannot explain to anybody, least of all to a twenty-two-year-old with a purple notebook.
And the thought that arrives is not I have sinned. The thought that arrives is worse and quieter. It is: He must miss her too.
What God actually said about the beginning
I want to take you to a sentence where God does the very thing you dread. He remembers the early days. He brings them up. He says them out loud.
And then I want you to look at the tone of it, because the tone is the whole thing.
I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.Jeremiah 2:2
Read who is talking and how. That is not a landlord going through the inventory. That is not a comparison. There is no and look at you now attached to it, not in the sentence, not in the grammar, not anywhere. It is the voice of someone holding a memory of you tenderly, the way you would hold a photograph of a person you love who is standing right in front of you.
You are not being remembered against yourself. That is not my read on it and it is not a kindness I am extending you on God's behalf; it is what the written word puts in His own mouth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ancient sentence land on a specific woman on a specific floor among specific boxes.
Now here is the part people miss, and it matters for you especially. Jeremiah 2 goes on to become a hard chapter. It is addressed to a nation that genuinely walked off. God is speaking to people who swapped Him for other gods and dug their own cisterns and did the whole thing deliberately.
You are reading a chapter that is not about you, and you have been applying it to yourself for years. The word of God is specific about who it is addressing and when, and the Spirit does not hand a believer someone else's indictment to carry around. You have not gone anywhere. You are in the same seat. What cooled is a feeling, and a feeling is not a departure.
What the tenderness is actually doing
So if it is not an accusation, what is it?
It is God saying: I was there. I saw it. I have not misplaced it.
Think about how much of your own early warmth has quietly been written off. You probably decided long ago that some of it was youth, and some of it was the music, and some of it was being twenty-two and having nothing much to lose. Maybe some of it was. But God, looking at the same period, calls it kindness and love, and He files it under things He remembers, and He does not spend one word downgrading it.
You have a God who took your early affection seriously and still does. That is written into the text as plainly as anything gets written, and His Spirit is what keeps that sentence from being a nice historical fact and makes it a thing said to you.
And notice which direction it runs. He is not remembering it in order to get something back. There is no leverage in it. Nowhere in that verse is there a hint of so return to that. He simply remembers, out loud, kindly, because that is what love does with the beginning of a thing.
Here is the piece that undoes the arithmetic on the floorboards. You are afraid He misses her. But missing requires losing, and He has not lost anybody. He has been with you every single one of the nineteen years between that notebook and this box. He was there in the flat with the bad boiler. He was there through the job you hated and the two years you barely spoke to anyone about anything. You were never left alone in the cooling. Scripture says He will never leave nor forsake, and the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping that true through every month of it, including the ones you cannot remember feeling anything in.
So here is the hour, and it is quieter than you might be expecting.
I am not going to ask you to get that girl back. I would not know how, and more to the point, God has not asked for her either. Nothing in this message needs you to work up a feeling, and if you finish it as flat as you began it, that is not a failure and it is not a verdict.
What is on offer is that you stop holding a nineteen-year-old notebook next to your face like a mirror.
The comparison was never God's. You brought it. You have been running an assessment He never opened, grading a woman He never graded, and quietly apologizing to Him for not being twenty-two. You are free of a judgment that was never passed on you, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God actually says about who is in Christ and what stands against them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes it off your back.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, standing or sitting, in whatever voice you have got today. The authority to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about how He remembers is the ground you are standing on, with the Holy Spirit carrying it and not the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because what any of this feels like by tonight is His to give and never yours to produce.
- Handwriting in a box, you are a memory and not a measurement, and I am done reading you as a complaint. The word of God says He remembers the kindness of my youth with affection and never once with a comparison attached, and I am putting the notebook down.
- Fear that He misses her, you have no ground to stand on here. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit has been with me through every quiet year in between, and nobody who has never left me is capable of missing me.
- Lord, You have held all nineteen years of this and not one of them was spent away from You. I thank You, because Your word remembers the beginning kindly and Your Spirit is the one who has kept every pipe in me exactly where You put it.
